Most thermostats, when they fail are open allowing the coolant to constantly circulate. When the engine is cooled remove the rad cap & start. The coolant should not be circulating. If it is, then replace the thermostat. Remove the top heater hose & support higher than the engine to purge air from the system. The coolant will quickly appear at the heater core. This will indicate that the heater core is not obstructed. Quickly install the hose & tighten. Once the thermostat is operating correctly then the heater should function normally.

Clogged Heater Core Symptoms

2016-11-08 04:12:09 · answer #2 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

Most thermostats when they fail become stuck in half open position alowing the engine to run cool under light driving conditions.
However, if the engine has a significant load on it such as driving up a hill, the thermostat won't open far enough to allow the coolant to flow fast enough to cool the engine and it will overheat.

As far as the heater core being plugged, it will not alow the heater box to warm the interior of the car but it will not affect the engine performace what so ever.

Well, unless you have a leak, the only thing at this point that will cause you car to overheat is the fan not coming on. You can run a car without a thermostat. It will take longer for your heat to get warm and you check engine light will probably come. Your heater core can be flushed of it's block with a garden hose. Unless it leaks (water on passenger floor). It would be better (and less hastle) if you just fix the problem. Is the fan coming on? If not, check the fuse, relay, fan motor.
