Sure the floor should hold up fine. You might want to keep the pets nails trimmed but otherwise there isn't any reason why you couldn't have pets in the house.

What kind of pets do you have? We have cats, and one room with real hardwood floors, not the laminates like Pergo. So far the floor looks flawless, but it's only 2 years old.

Do some investigation on what kind of finishes you can use on a hardwood floor. Our installer used a lacquer finish. He said it would last much longer than polyurethane. The downside is that for a day or two, the smell is pretty strong.

depends on the pet, older dogs tend to slip and fall over and not stable, younger ones alright but smaller animals tend to run around a lot and can do damage to themselves and furniture..so really depends on the pet.
I am waiting for my dog to live out her life before I put down flooring that I want, carpet will do for now..she's not study on her legs and I worry that she will slip and break a bone.

wait for a few months and then see their claw marks on it.takes a lot of effort to get it varnished again
