if you are starting or in your first year of highschool, you are a freshman, or in 9th grade.
Sophomore-10th grade
Junior-11th grade
Senior-12th grade

....then you graduate and off to college if you go that route!

(also....
from the beginning, you go to Kindergarten (age 6 or so)
Then 1st through 8th grade are called just that--they don't have any names like high school does...

It's really determined by the school district, and the way they divide their classes. Some districts consider elementary as grades 1 though 5, some 1 through 6. Sometimes, what we call Junior High School is grades 6 through 9 or 6 through 8 or 5 through 8. High school can be grades 9 through 12 or 10 through 12. What matters to the districts are the student population and how many teachers required. Where my grandchildren went to school in Houston, grades 1 through 5 were elementary, grades 6 through 9 were Junior High, and grades 10 through 12 were High School. When I went to school, grades 1 through 6 were elementary, grades 7-8 were Junior High, and grades 9 through 12 were High School.
If you were in the U.S., you would be in 7th grade....Junior High School.

7th grade is "middle school" here. You attend middle school for 7-8 grades. In 9th grade, you start high school. After 12th grade, you can begin college.

Yes, most european educational systems are laid out quite differently. American schools remain different even through the 4 years of college. While in Europe, you will probably focus your studies for 4 years on your major. In America, we have what is called a "liberal arts" education. In college, while you DO study your major, it is to a lesser degree. Instead, you are still required to study physical education, english, literature, mathematics, history etc. even if you are majoring in "dance".

After your bachelor's degree, you actually do get down to business at "Graduate school". Your masters and doctorate degrees become more like the European programs and focus on your area of study exclusively.

So, what it boils down to is that the American school system is designed to be longer and to cover more variety in education. Personally, I'm a fan of the quicker, more intensive European system, but I'm in the minority here.

Does that help?

High school in my state starts at the 10th grade, there is no freshman level in this state for high school.

so it would be junior high is for grades 7th through 9th then at 10th grade your in high school.

So to convert you would be at the 9th grade level here and that would be in your last year at junior high. Then at 10th grade (your 8th grade) you would go to a new school and that would be the high school.

I am not sure why there are diffrences in school systems in the USA but i am thinking it is due to each state wanting to have some controll over it's self.

Your first year in high school is considered your freshman year in the USA, but you begin junior high after your 6th grade so technically you are a 7th grader in the USA.
