If the debit card has a Visa or Mastercard logo on it, if can be used as a credit card.

But while PayPal is a very secure way to deal, I would still use a credit card because a credit card offers protections a debit card doesn't.

Check with you bank

You don't have to give PayPal a credit or debit card when you sign up. Check their FAQ, or Help, Or Support, whatever works, for ways to put money in your account. I know they'll take a check if you send them one. Also, decide which plan\type of account you want, or look them over while you're there. You can open an account with no money in it, I know, I did.

If you read through the options carefully you will find that the use of both a Credit Card as well as a Bank Account simply makes you a Verified client that people look at before dealing with someone they may have trouble collecting or paying.
It is a little bit of a pain but well worth your effort.
