This would be from the colonial era. I'm thinking no because there was the house of burgesses in Virginia.

this is an excerpt from a multiple choice question, but im unsure because another answer is: many colonial governors ruled with autocratic powers. I'm not sure if that is true orfalse either. its definately between those two though.

the question in title is actually one of the choices in question form, in case that confused anyone. Of the two things I gave, one must be true and the other must be false. here are the choices in choice form:

Representative democracy was initially limited to the New England states

Many colonia governors ruled with autocratic powers

A fairly difficult question--but you are right about the House of Burgesses. also, in other non-NE colonies, there was also representative democracy (e.g. South Carolina).

So that answeer is not correct. However, those "democracies" were NOT like the state government we have today. The "voice fo the people" was often limted--often to property-owning white men. And the colonial governors in some cases did have autocratic powers, and could act accordingly, despite the democratic aspect. some of these governors were appointed by the Crown back in England--and the representative legislatures could not overrule them.

So the correct answer is that some colonial governors did ruel with autocratic powers.

The first is false. Representive democracy began with the formation of the Untied States and included all thirteen not just New England.
The second is true. It says COLONIAL governors. These were appointed by England and given pretty much free reign to produce profit for England.
Edit. My original answer is not totally correct. You are right about the House of Burgesses but the appointed Governors were not required to abide by any decisions of any such body.

America has not had a democracy for a long time..you have two party's that are basically the same and orchestrate elections to entertain the masses and let them believe they actually have power...if you really had a "democracy" then all who choose would be on the ballots...not happening in America...
