Unless he is under considerable stress, there should be little change at this age.
By considerable stress I mean:
Loss of job/income
A major health problem
Loss of a loved-one
Being forced to retire
Needing to move
Being demoted at work
Losing his home
Death of a close one
etc.
By 55, a man should be over any of that 'male menopause' stuff. If any of the above (or other highly stressful things) have occured, it could put him into a depression--he may develop anxiety, etc.
I would take him in for a medical exam (if he has not recently had one), to make sure that he does not have a physical ailment--the body and mind can have affects upon each other.
Good luck, and I hope that the gentleman will be fine in no time :)

Arrao compiles quite a list. I, personally, am 55 and soon to be 56 and I experience little or none of those. Certainly they are possible. It is an individual difference sort of thing. Being absent minded I confess to, but then I have always been that. When I was young I used to do woodworking and spent half my time looking for tools I laid down. No. The only significant thing that I can surely attribute to my age is loss of mental accuity.
I am just not as smart as I used to be.

Do you mean mental problems? I don't know of any specific conditions that strike men at around that age.
If not, guys at that age can be really set in their ways - not too flexible up top if you know what I mean. Probably grumpy old man syndrome too.
