It is natural to gravitate to people you have things in common with, or people who are familiar to you, or at the very least, people who are interesting to you.
There is no shame in belonging to a group. Human beings are social and ultimately we all form groups.

It depends on the groups, I can find something to talk about with just about anyone in a social setting, but if the group is engrossed in talking about something I know nothing about, all I give is a few "uh-huh" and thoughtful nods. Women are easier to talk to because we can always talk about what our kids are doing. Isn't it funny how often at a family gathering the mingling breaks down on gender lines? Uncles over here, Aunts over there.

I like small groups, whether I know the people or not. Easier to be heard, as I'm not one to yell over the crowd. I don't find it easy to mingle, but it is great to hang around all types of people.

The latter.
I can only mingle if it's at an event I was interested in attending and/or if I notice that there's people with similar interest(s). Explains why I really dislike wedding dinners and other stuff that I have to attend not because I wanted to.

Well.......it all depends on the events that you're in. If it's kinda formal or you're invited by a friend's friend, that you hardly know, I rather stick to a select group, so that i can observe from far how people act and hear what people talk from afar. I am a social person, thanks to Toastmasters International....I feel more confident, even if I may not know the person at all......to talk to when necessary.
So, it all depends in situations.
