Although you may have the trilogy, a fourth film, Alien Resurrection, was released in 1997.
The first film, Alien, was directed by Ridley Scott (who, coincidentally, studied at my school in the north east of England). The film was about a ship's crews battle against a sole alien.
The second film, Aliens, was directed by James Cameron. The film was about a group of marines battle against a huge queen alien and her offspring. The film introduced the character Newt, a young girl who Ripley protects. Unfortunately, Newt is shown to have died at the very start of Alien 3, directed by David Fincher.
Although 'Aliens' is sometimes regarded as the more 'gung-ho' movie, a sort of Platoon in Space, it is arguably just as good as (some would say better than) the first movie, with many moments of suspense and building of atmosphere rather than just all out action.

Aliens (the added "s" means there are more aliens)
if you mean the film, Alien is the first film
and Aliens is the second film.

alien is directed by ridley scott and is a horror thriller. the first sequel is called aliens and it is directed by james cameron and is an action thriller. both are excellent fare, while the three other alien movies are all crap.

ALIEN had only 1 and it was on the ship killing everyone. More of a sci-fi horror
ALIENS had many on a colony planet and marines had to go down there to kill them. Was made into an action film.
