Can you have it filled with petrol and stored in your boot...or must it be empty and only used if you run out of fuel to walk to a petrol station and fill it and walk back???

A properly held down fuel can or plasitc container with fuel would not be a problem unless the car was rear ended while your getting out to grab the full gas can to get another 20 miles. Spillage smelly fuel inside my car make me nervious. Just pour a cup of "petrol" you call it on the ground and put a lit match to it it won't explode but it sure would make a big fire. Diesel is another story it will not burn unless it is heated up or compressed. Just watch your fuel level and not run out is the best answer.
