The U.S. government is developing a new generation of nuclear bombs and there is no information at all in the media about this program. Is this a sign of increased censorship, or just another symptom of how lazy and apathetic reporters have become?

Both.

There is hardly ever justification for government secrecy, other than giving the details of, for example, how to make a nuclear weapon. All other secrecy is all about coverup and keeping incompetence and corruption out of the news. If the USA is going to make new nukes, and if they have good reasons for doing so, then tell us about it. Of course they will just lie about the reasons for it anyway, so don't bother.

On the other hand, the proper function of the press is to dig as hard as necessary to find this stuff out, and if they can't find out about it, take the government to court until they do find out. The big flaw with American capitalism is that the press is privately owned. It was inevitable that the big corporations that own the press would become bedmates of the government and collaborate in keeping government secrets. The press, which is supposed to be one of the main pillars of freedom in this country, has become a joke.

Some is that reportes are attracted to the "shinny thing" which is Iraq right now.

When I was in Iraq, a reporter legitimatly stumbled upon something big, and not positive. It only carried in his paper and was picked up by the public. The reason was the current "shinny thing" was John Murtha and extra body armor. There were hundreds of storys about what was really a non-issue, but the other story was forgotten.

The other reason, there are press releases on this, but the government doesnt talk about it a lot since its classified. So there isnt much to report. The government isnt hiding it in a censorhip, they admit it. There just isnt info available on it.

What I read about it, the improvements over the old bombs in the end will actually reduce the nubmer of overall weapons.

Its also interesting that you only ask about the US and not Russia who was also modernizing thier bombs as well.

There is no money in reporting "new nukes" currently. The purpose of running a news business is making money and there is no sales interest in "nukes" right now. Journalism is a business and business is driven by profit or buried by the lack of it.
Reporters, like other people, have never been interested in anything other than the carrot at the end of the week. They have to pay rent, buy food, pay taxes, and all the rest just like everybody else.
News organizations are driven forward by the revenues generated from advertising. There are no cash incentives for truthful content.

I only wish the media would keep things that would harm this country "secret"...they are all too willing to print whatever they can to hurt this country and this administration.........and I hope they ARE developing a new generation of nukes...peace through strength......do you really think that if Russian or china thought they could get a strike on us without much of a chance of retaliation that they wouldn't strike??....you better believe they would and we had BETTER stay better then they are...that is the ONLY way a strike will NOT happen.....wake up

I don't think very highly of the national media currently. I liken their running of our nation to something which belongs in a circus.

That said, I believe in a free press. But when you live close to the local news and see how it gets out there you get jaded.

Some press is good press. Some press is just marketing.

You know, I don't care if it shows laziness and apathy, or whatever. I am really sick and tired of everyone thinking our government is obligated to wave all of our military secrets and capabilities for the whole world, including enemies, to see and react to. Good thing you weren't cognizant of military secrets circa WWI and WWII, you would have had a stroke.

there are new and updated nukes built all the time. Older and deteriorating ones are dismantled and disposed of. Same with our aircraft. To sum it all up it simply isn't news. It's an on-going thing...maintenance
