Near side is the side nearest to the kerb or your left.

It has nothing to do with which side the driver site even for left handed drive cars.

funny I always wondered that so it is offside from the kerb could of been near side to the white lines for all I knew.

The driver of the car sits toward the niddle of the road in right hand drive or left hand drive cars. I would have trouble shifting with my left hand for about ten minutes.
