Who do you consider to be the best guitarist of the modern day?
In my own, opinion it would have to be Synyster Gates.

yes, i think its definaltly synyster gates he is so amazing!!! and hes really young too, i think that we will see alot out of him!

Steve Vai, he's just from another planet, there are some with better and more accurate technique (his is also beyond doubt amazing!), but writing wise, have you heard what he writes?! He is definitely not from around here. If you are into solo artists and most importantly instrumental music, then you should know what I'm talking about. He has a whole lot of songs as well, which he himself sings. He's no Johann Sebastian Bach, that I know, but he's pretty good at that too. Listen to any album, particularly Fire Garden! Pretty hard to digest at once, as he himself claims.
I mean, he replaced Vanderberg in White Snake in the 80's, playing along Coverdale and doing an amazing job (The Slip of the Tongue)! He replaced Malmsteen in Alcatrazz, and also did an amazing job! Yet I have not seen him being mentioned anywhere around here yet.

I dont know who this synister gates is, but i know Bucket Head and Eddie Van Halen are hands down the best guitarists in the world.

modern day... hmmm synyster gates is really good but so are Matt Heafy and Corey Beauilieau from trivium and the dudes from DragonForce!

no such thing as the best. Here is my list of some of the greats: Roy Buchanan, Mike Bloomfield, Eric clapton,
Stevie Ray Vaughn, BB King. There are so many guitar
greats the list would go on and on.
