I believe all welfare recipients should be required to do community service work.....a way to give back for getting "freebies" (unless they are disabled, of course). What do you think?

William Jefferson Clinton already pushed Congress to pass meaningful welfare reform. Able bodied persons lose their benefits if they do not find work.

look there are alot of misconceptions about people on welfare. welfare does not pay enough to sustain people, most dont stay on it for more than 6month, and those that do are cut off after 2 years, keep in mind the percent that do stay on for that long is very low about 1-2%. the whole comm service thing wouldnt work to well and wouldnt be too fair since until they lost their jobs they were also payin for welfare so they do deserve their share in it. welfare is nothing more than a safety net to catch you till you get back on your feet, you cant mooch off it like everyone thinks

No, because it would displace local and county workers that are already on the payroll! This would suppress wages for these people. A possible better option would be have them pay the funds back when they are working again! It would be interesting to see how many are willing to accept entitlement under those conditions! Forced labor smacks of legalized slavery!

Sounds good in theory, but not very practical.
The cost of selecting, screening and supervising those people, may far out weigh the benefits. Are you going to provide training, so the work isn't just a payback, but a real stepping stone to employment?
Who is going to provide the child care for the single parents - or help them met the cost? Are the elderly on benefits included? Or only the unemployed? And if we have all those people doing "voluntary" work, would it put other people out of employment?

Hence the term community service. the other person needs to remember what community service is. It means anything from picking up cig butts in a city parking lot. to other simple tasks. Childcare wouldnt be an issue. if you worked a schedule around them. No way you say well how are these welfare ho's having time to go clubbing and meeting men to knock them up, they got some type of childcare
im for this

I think that's a great idea!

It would be a great incentive for people to get jobs. Even if they didn't, we all know that you spend your money more carefully when you feel that you've worked hard for it. It would give a sense of accomplishment, too. That's something that many of those people have never had!

I'm all for it.

Don't be such a nazi. If we did that, we'd end up with forced labor camps. All authority is eventually abused.
