Hello, I want to preform a reformat on my computer but I tested my computer first and found that the hard-drive has an 'HD521-2W' error. I looked it up and found that the hard drive is failing basicly... a few questions

1) Is what i looked up true? That the hard-drive is failing?
1a) Can i possibly fix it on my own without opening the computer up.

2) How would I go about replacing the hard drive and installing it again with the OS and everything I'd need to have a functional computer?

A reformat will not help,if you have the disc to install, buy another hard drive, and swap out the bad one.

If this is a OEM machine, like an HP or some other company and you do not have a windows disc, than you will have to use a program like Acronis true image, make a backup of your install and than install that backup on a new disc.

Either way you are gonna need a new harddrive.

1: You cannot resolve without opening the PC. the hard drive resides interenally, so it needs to be opened to remove it.
Also if the XP installed finds faults withthe drive it's really time to replace it, if nothing else as a precaution

2: To replace the HDD, open case, locate drive, disconnect.
Unscre it and remove.
Look on back, check the MA/SL/CS jumper (small plastic bit over 2 metal pins) and set new drive to same settings.

Install drive and screw in place, reconnect cables.

3: Read up at www.windowsreinstall.com (prob best to do this bit first and print off relevant pages) for full guides on reinstalling windows.

More than likely the way it sounds you will have format it. hope you have complete recovery cd's. by the way have you tried all recovery methods for HP. If you have complete recovery disk, format replace OS, if not from OS windows cd,then get missing drives from HP, one thing they are good at is replacing drives windows OS disk dose not. anyway back to your problem , after put windows back on you will find there are many programs on the Internet that will bring info from compressed files. Maybe your aware files never are erased just encrypted. the price varies, but I don't think there is any other way. good luck, hope maybe you can find cheaper way to do it or won't have to format.

Yes you need a new hard drive...
There not that hard to install...
Just four little screws and reconnect the two wires that you unplugged...

Then put your master CD that came with your computer in and it will format the drive and reinstall your software...Joe
