DON'T listen to Mercury2010 unless you want your snake to remain aggressive towards you! In the wild, predators usually go for the snake's head. Naturally, they won't respond well to someone grabbing them around the neck. Steve Irwin didn't like to grab snakes like this, even the poisonous ones. It makes them panic and aggressive towards the handler.

Depends on what kind of snake. How big a snake are we talking about here? And if it's a baby, you should just let it glide back and forth in your hands.

When picking up my four ft ball python, I always touch him on the back first to let him know I'm there. The snake won't be startled and think a predator is picking it up then. Pick it up by curling your fingers around the center of the body; once you get it out of the cage, use your other hand to support its front so it doesn't feel like its dangling. Don't go too close to the head, as they aren't very fond of someone grabbing them around the neck (i'm not very fond of it myself ^^;) Snakes are actually more likely to bite while your picking it up as opposed to while your handling it. The process of being picked up feels like they're being carried off by a predator, and some snakes never really adjust to it. That's why many people use snake hooks to lift it out of the cage. Once they're out, they're generally fine and calm.

The trick is to let the snake feel that he's free while you're holding him...just let him move through your hands, and keep adjusting your hands and arms so you are holding him as he moves.

grab it tight right behind the head. it may pulse and jump aroudn, but it won't be able to bite you.
