im thinking of boarding my loft out to use as storage space mainly carboot items such as suitcases full of clothes dvds ect these items will be quite heavy my floor joists in the loft are 4x2 would this cope with the weight i intend to put up or would i need to put addition joists to support the weight also my loft space is 15ft wide 23ft length so i could space the weight out

Hmmm 2x4 joists/beams for a loft?

I suspect the structure needs reinforcing no matter,,,even if only for the weight of whatever you use above for flooring. At the very least you might HANG and attach additional 2x4 to those existing...or if you are able, use posts from the next floor level down, to those 2x4's for the purpose of actually USING the loft.

This should not be a problem. Use some half inch plywood. Be careful not to bother any electrical wiring that may exist.
You might put a few nails in this flooring so it doesn't move around. Be careful not to nail into any wiring. Good Luck.

if the 2x4's run in the 23' direction they won't support much weight. even if they run in the 15' one the 23' span needs to be a decent sized header to support any amount of weight.
