My latest thing is to buy boldly coloured eye liners rather than eye shadows. I just apply a light neutral colour on the whole lid and then a neat line of bold colour where I'd normally apply eyeliner. I then blend the colour in a bit using the line brush end of my posh Jemma Kidd brush ( http://www.boots.com/shop/product_details.jsp?productid=1067224&classificationid=1040125 ) and add mascara. The colour is still bright and pretty, just controlled. The mini me eyeliners from Miss Sporty are great for this (and cheap!). They're available in Boots and at www.misssporty.co.uk If you have a big collection of eyeshadow already, you could try dampening it and applying it in a similar way to the eyeliner suggestion, using a line brush. Hope that helps! :)
EDIT: Oh yes, totally agree about keeping the rest of your make up very low key. V good point! :)

i always do this, and people always tell me that i should work at M.A.C. the most important thing is you gotta go all the way with it, apply more then one eye shadow and BLEND i cannot stress that enough, cos you dont wanna look like you have different stripes on your lids...choose a color scheme you wanna go with, like blue and purple, or green and turqoise, or pink and purple, and apply the darkest shade at the lash line, and then work up to the lightest on the brow bone, and it also looks nice if you go half way to your eye below the bottom lashes, and try to find an eyeliner that matches, (use it inside, from the tear duct to the end of the eye) i've found blue to work well with most, dont use black it looks dumb...i know this may seem weird but try it and dont give up when it looks kinda odd, just go with it, i've used as much as 6 eyeshadows at once, maybe more...and it looks wonderfull! dont mix liquid and powder though...

ok all bright colour eye shadows must need a lighter coat to go with them jus to blend over the top! one shade is never a great look if u have a blue eye shadow go for a white and lighty blend over top... keep going until the colours even. its a golden rule hahah never use one single colour in a bright shade thats how u get the 'tacky'l ook!

keep the rest of your make up simple, the use a little eyeliner across your top lid, and slowly build up the colour little by little keeping the colour even. apply two coats of mascra, and make sure no eyeshadow has fallen on to your cheeks.
also using several shades of one colour i.e are darker one on the crease of your a and a little colour on your lid, will also look better.
hope this helps.

You strt of with the bold color you wnt,, then when you get halfway across the eyelid, change it into a 2 or 3 stage lighter eyeshadow,, ( if that makes sense lol )

after you apply your eye make up blend it with a blush-on brush so the color will flow continuously from one color to the other without making it look like cheap and bold. "blending is the key"

Apply them as eyeliner instead. Take a thin eyeliner brush and make a thin line on you top lid. Don't use a bold color on your entire eyelid.

if the eyeshadows are loose powder apply some vasaline first and then a thin layer of the eyeshadow as that will help it stick and look neat.

Don't wear trampy clothes with it. Simple pale lips go with dramatic eyes.
