Ok so basically my laptop was working fine yesterday and i was using the internet etc & Ive never had any problems with it before. I shut it down properly and everything. This morning i went on it and it said _Operating system not found. So i rebooted it this time with the windows xp disk in, and that all loaded fine. I went to re-install windows XP and it said i had no hard disk /no hard disk installed!! Now when i turn it on i cant even load the xp disk on it, it just says TOSHIBA, then goes on to saying- "_ no operating system found"! This has never happened before and it always works smoothly! Please tell me if there is an easy way of fixing this! This laptop is a Toshiba S1000-Z2 ! PLEASE help! (and only if you KNOW what you are talking about) (Btw this laptop has always run on xp and is fairly new)

Sounds like 1 of 2 things

Hard drive got knocked loose, Check toshiba website / manual for details on which cover is HDD one, open it and reseat harddrive.

Failing that could be a failed hard drive, contact Tosh for support

You might need to get it repaired. I hope it's under warranty because if it's not you'll end up with a pretty big bill.

This isn't a virus despite what some clueless people may say (asking only those who know what they're talking about to answer doesn't seem to those who don't know but think they do), a virus would not prevent you from reinstalling the OS, this looks like it might be hardware problem to me.

Though I should ask how you tried to boot from CD? Did you put the CD in and hope it would boot straight from CD or did you push F2 while it displayed TOSHIBA and then selected the CD icon or did you press ESC at some point and edit the boot order in the BIOS? If you didn't get into the Windows installer try something else but if you did then you'll be up for a warranty repair if it's still under warranty.

There are a few things you could have going on here:

A. most likely you have an iPod or something plugged in that has a hard drive, and your laptop is trying to boot off of that. Unplug EVERYTHING from your machine other than the power cable, and try again.

B. Your BIOS is not detecting your drive, but it's working correctly (very unlikely).

C. Your hard drive controller is dead or malfunctioning (very bad).

D. Your hard drive is malfunctioning or dead (not great, but replaceable).

I hope for your sake it ends up being option A. I've done it myself. You get freaked out then realize that your laptop is trying to boot off of an iPod. If this is happening, read up on how to edit your boot order in your BIOS so that it skips your external devices, or puts them after your hard drive.

you might find something here Laptop. Desktop Power settings ========================== The following text is written to help fault find, so you have to choose what settings you want your laptop to stay in, and rearrange the text to suit. Right click on the empty space on the desktop >properties >screensaver tab >power set everything to never in the drop down menu. Choose if you want to login on screensaver restore disable hibernation choose what you want to do when lid closes, or power button etc. click the battery tab and set the alarm and stuff so the battery will never fully discharge.. set up a screen saver say 15 minutes is ok apply etc Then open device manager (see help files - click start > help and support) Or right click the my computer icon >manage >device manager Look for and expand the universal serial bus right click on each one listed underneath >properties >power tab choose so the power stays on.. Do each USB listed that has a Power tab. This is the best set up to eliminate hassles to help trouble shooting. Only choose power saving settings if you really have to. If you want to use power settings then make sure you have them in order, first screensaver, then monitor, then hdd. Hibernate is restored by hitting the Power button..

maybe you got a loose hard drive.. if you can open it, try to check the hard drive if it is in the proper place...

another cause might be virus problem... since you said you went surfing last night so maybe you got yourself infected and the virus took effect after a reboot. some virus do that and they sometimes ruin your system registry so that 1. you cant log in 2. your files will be deleted or 3. they just mess up your computer so bad that you need to reformat.

about the boot problem, when you turn on your laptop, press F12 immediately (thats what i do on my toshiba or ESC on Compaq) and it will let you choose if you will boot on your hard drive or boot on cd/dvd.. since you said that it doesnt recognize your hard drive, so you need to boot on cd/dvd.. maybe you can try REPAIR on the windows xp cd..

take it to a computer repair shop, or you could do it at home but it would require a second computer and the proper tools to take it apart.
