I agree it sounds like croup or he could have bronchospasms which is basically asthma. If you can't see the pedriatrician right away turn on your shower to all the way hot and let it fill your bathroom with steam(obviously do not put your child in the shower-bathtub), then take him bundled out in the night air, if it is croup this should help and if it is bronchospasm the shower will help, and rub his back to calm him, also have him sleep in a more upright position for the drainage...
Good Luck.. and yes definitely call the doc on this one~

Oh please take him to the doctor ASAP. My little boy caught it when he was 2 and suddenly stopped breathing right and started gasping for air; it ended up turning into pneumonia and he was very ill. It is croup and the earlier you catch it the less severe it will be. My little guy had to go the hospital, and get chest x-rays and all kinds of icky stuff. It is also highly contagious, so any siblings or daycare friends should also be cautious or informed. For right now give him a childrens cough supressant and run a vaporizor for him, take him in tomorrow! Poor little guy, I hope he feels better soon.

Stop giving him anything dairy, it causes mucus. Burn a good quality eucalyptus oil in an oil burner over night in his room. Give him tissue salts (Kali Mur and Ferr Phos). I wouldn't recommend a cough suppressant, it will just come back instead of clearing it, or come out as some other problem. Just my opinon though, good luck with whatever you try!

Go to webmd.com and I believe that you can talk to some one on line like a nurse so go there that can help you or call the emergency room and see what they recommend
