Usual collection of misinformation here! Guesses by people who don't know the answers.

Looking at the SUN at any time can damage your retinas: the infrared (heat, not ultraviolet!) can literally cook your retinas, resulting in permanent blind spots. You can look at the Sun safely only with a special filter: a #14 welder's glass (darker than the standard #12) or "eclipse glasses" or a solar filter specifically designed for telescopes. Nothing else gives adequate protection, no matter what you may read. Any filters should be removed during the total phase of a solar eclipse so that you can see the prominences and the corona, the whole reason for looking at an eclipse.

Eclipses of the Moon, such as the one this week, are perfectly safe to view; the Moon never reflects enough light to be dangerous.

You can view a lunar eclipse but not a solar eclipse. If you view a solar eclipse, the sudden change in light intensity(particularly the heat from the infra-red radiation) may damage your eye retina.
The human eye, as a protective measure, can adjust automatically to varying light conditons.During the day when there is bright illumination,it closes partially and under dark conditions,as in the night,it opens fully. However this process of adjustment takes some time which may be some few minutes.
During a total solar eclipse, the eye is fully open to let in more light as it will be dark at that time. After totality,as the sun emerges, the increase in light intensity is so sudden that it catches the eye unawares.Being very bright,it can damage the retina even in a few seconds.

Only an eclipse of the sun. The high level of ultraviolet light will burn holes in you retina.
Lunar eclipses are lit by light reflected from the Moon and so can do no more damage than a full moon.

If your eyes start smelling like bacon, that's the sign that you need to look away.
