Evaluate: (2.1 * 10^-4) + (3.6 * 10^-5)?

To multiply by 10^N, all you have to do is move the decimal point N places to the right (and it follows that if you have -N, you would be moving to the left. 4 to the left IS -4 to the right, after all)

So 2.1 x 10^-4 = .00021 and 3.6 x 10^-5 = .000036

.00021+.000036 = .000246

You can express that as 2.46 x 10^-4. Just reverse the process. The number of places you moved the decimal to the left is the exponent of 10. (4 to the right = -4 to the left.)
