Since girls are the future seamstresses of their families, I believe that a girl should know how to sew by age 11. This will mean she has another 'notch on her belt' complete and will be closer to marriagable material. A good seamstress is of great worth for she can stitch or patch the holes in her boys' pants or create a beautiful dress for her daughter.

You have answered your own question admirably, boys too should learn how to sew on a button and make repair, as an ex-seaman, sewing skills were needed, the most common stitch was the herring bone stitch used in sewing canvas, perhaps some will say it is not necessary to learn to sew, but it is a handy thing to know.

Oh Goddess no. Most women don't sew, and are not seamstresses. Most clothing is machine made, and most designers are men. Perhaps it is men that should learn to sew? Either way, generally people do not make clothing for them selves any more, so it is not really a necessary talent.

I think they should know before then.. I could sew at 8. Every girl needs to know how to do some minor sewing..and so should men.. though we may have to give men longer to learn to sew, say what 20..maybe by then they will of reached and 11 year old girls maturity.

the single situation you do not say is how previous you're. At eleven a 2 3 hundred and sixty 5 days age hollow sounds like a life-time. in case you're older and characteristic approached her it must be intimidating. by the time she is thirteen somebody of 18 night intimidate her, the place 2 years would appear as if not something. by 20 a 15 or 20 3 hundred and sixty 5 days distinction will possibly not look so undesirable. provide her time.

No. If something needs to be repaired, then take it to the tailor. They know what they're doing. I don't. I was never taught to sew, and I'm horrible with anything related to a needle and thread, even knitting. If the girl wants to sew, teach her to sew. If not, then let her be.

I can sew but not very well. I can make you a shirt with one sleeve longer than the other and it would probably be ten sizes to small... Does that count as knowing how to sew? I made a poncho for my cat once...

You realize they often teach men to sew in the military? It is considered a useful skill for anyone. Personally, I could sew at that age, but you're going to get a lot of angry answers...

I believe both boys and girls should be taught the basics of sewing, in case either need to mend their own clothes.

i know very few girls who know how to sew let alone be labeled a "seamstress". if a girl wants to sew i guess she can sew if she wants to. not many people do that anymore. it's not the typical role of a woman anymore. have you been frozen in ice for the past 40 years or something
