i toyed with this and i built an old chev 350 with a modified vortect intake system, and it ran 2,4,6,8 cyl with a knob change, but it was rough, sputters, and the motor wears quickly because it was not designed to do this

Shut down one or two, and the others work all that much harder to make up for the lost power. Lose power, lose speed. Also because the others are working harder, you increase your chance of bending or breaking a connecting rod. I would advise against trying this. As far as saving gas, SLOW DOWN!

well since the computer shuts off the fuel injectors
you would not be able to do it
if you did manage to do this then it would only be while cruising since it doesnt require as much power to maintain a certian speed than to accelerate

No. because since the engine is not designed to run that way you would only ruin it. The factory has a way of doing it,but there is more to it than what you are suggesting.
