If that yr Yamaha has a removable mid section 5" piece than yes with a new drive shaft. If not than no. Raise the transom 5" or sell as get the correct 1.

It not hard, but, may be expensive. You just remove the lower unit and stem and replace with a shorter. IF, you could find an engine that have a bad power-head (Engine) you may have all your parts. May, be easy then, just remove your power-head and put on the other. Also, this where more research comes in, you may not have to have the same year model, which I feel is very likely. You just need your power-head to have the same bolt pattern.
Here an example to help; Say you have a 1990 Chevy 350 engine. Can you bolt up a 1980 Transmission? Off hand I would say it very possible.

I am quite sure you should be able to remove the long shaft leg and replace it with the short shaft leg assembly
