I usually read fairly fast, and it's usually not hard for me to focus, but I can't focus now. I think it's because it's a book for school and I need to finish it today, and I have questions to answer!

I've been reading for several hours now, with the TV, computer, and radio off, and I just can't focus. I have to keep rereading it.

The book I'm reading is called Founding Brothers by Joseph Ellis. It's for my AP US History class.

Turn off the TV, get yourself a nice salad, something not fattening such as lettuce & tomato w/ either lemon or lime juice and a little salt. Now pour yourself a large glass of water with ice. You need brain food and this will help. Go get your sunglasses, put them on, now go back, read your book, nibble on the salad from time to time. This should help you get back your focus. You have to stay hydrated in order to concentrate while you're reading.

Is there anything on your mind that is bugging you? If so, take a few minutes to come to some kind of resolution about whatever is bugging you. You may not be able to deal with it totally, but what you can do is schedule a time to figure out how to deal with it. Say, "I will deal with that issue Monday at 4:30pm" or something like that. That way, you have scheduled it in the future and you will be able to put it out of your mind right now. This may help you focus right now.

If there is nothing bugging you, then maybe you could try reading the book out loud into a tape recorder. Make a tape of the reading so that you can listen to it later, maybe while you are exercising, doing some chore, or whatever. If you don't pick up on what you are reading now, maybe you will soak it in when you play back the tape. Also, reading it out loud helps you not drift off. It keeps you actively reading and keeps your mind from wandering. This works for me anyway.

Good luck!

Take notes or tell someone else about the book. But GET OFF THE COMPUTER and JUST READ. I read really fast too, but it varies from book to book. I read the 7th Harry Potter in 3 hours, but certain books that are much shorter could take me much longer. Just quit whining about it and DO IT.

What I do when it's hard for me to fully take in a book is I'll just summarize with sticky notes as I go along. For some reason, it just makes it easier for me to summarize/ annotate.

imagine!! think of the story as a story and FORGET all worries!!

my teacher always makes us choose what to read and i always choose novels about love because it is easy to read.. cheesy sometimes but it makes me committed to the book in a way! haha (-:
