Many of the inequalities that were visited on slaves are historically accurate, although somewhat sensationalized and over-stressed for dramatic purposes. Obviously the slave owners could not have physically injured the slaves quite as much as shown in the series, or they wouldn't have had anyone available to work the fields. Yes, lots of slave owners "fornicated" with their slaves. That part is true. (BTW, Randolph Jefferson, NOT Thomas, slept with the Jefferson slaves. DNA test have proven this.) There was also a huge amount of violence and oppression perpetuated against slaves, in every pre-industrial society. The most glaringly inaccurate thing in the TV series is the portrayal of how blacks were caught into slavery... slavery STILL exists on the African continent today, and in the 17th-19th centuries, the most common method of capturing slaves was when one sub-Saharan warring tribe sold the warriors and rebellious members of the defeated tribe. That's still true today. Slavery (or indentured servitude, or being born into a lower class without hope of leaving it) was a common feature of all pre-industrial societies... right up until the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century... even ancient Greece. Western nations are not alone in this, slavery (indentured servitude, etc) was still common in China and Japan and Russia until the 1930's... until the 1950's/early 60's in many remote areas of the world... still going on in the remotest Amazon and Indonesia an many parts of sub-Saharan Africa. Something "roots" didn't show - there were also thousands of Asian and Caucasian slaves in the antebellum US south. At the time this series was set, the Irish people were slaves to the English - not allowed to own land or property or go to school or work in any but laborer jobs, and British landowners could kill or maim Irish at will. Although slavery was officially abolished in England long before in the US, in actual practice slavery continued under other guises until long after slavery was abolished in the US (hereditary lower class membership, hereditary upper class/nobility, etc). Not excusing or apologizing for slavery. I cannot excuse that kind of brutal treatment of human beings, and I can't apologize for something someone else did to another person over 100 years before I was born.
