Well, my dream is to be a doctor. More specifically, I want to be an Anesthesiologist. The problem is that I'm totally not into science, but I love math. I'm thinking that my dreams may not work out because taking science classes in my high school is a total bore to me and I'm left uninterested. Soooo.. I also have the pressure of my Asian parents to pursue the dreams of becoming a "doctor," but the lack of interest in the science department is definitely a problem. And I don't really have any other options, especially with the pressure from my family and all. Everyone is expecting me to become one. I love Broadway, but I don't know if that would be the proper career for me. Singing and acting is just a hobby i guess.

Well personally I think you should definitely go for your dreams. I know you would be happy and though your family may be a little disappointed. They love you and want you to be happy. If you really go for your dreams, then they will see how happy you are and that is all that matters.

As far as not being interested in science. I understand. I can't stand science and always did bad in it in school. I wanted to be a psychologist. However, I ended up having two kids and don't have time for it now. But I am going to school for medical transcription. Which believe it or not requires TONS of science. If I could I would underline that like three times. However I am doing really good in my studies. You just have to learn that you CAN learn ANYTHING. And learn little tricks that will help you learn it. Pick out things and try to look at it from different angles and try to see what could be interesting about it. It's working for me. My GPA is 3.68
Not wonderful, but definitely better than I ever thought I would be able to do.

Here's the thing. Virtually any field which involves high level math is also going to involve science. This would apply whether you wanted to be a doctor or an engineer. Becoming a doctor is going to involve a lot of chemistry and biology - and being an anesthesiologist will be even more chemistry.

But the real question is whether you actually hate science or if you hate the way it's taught in high school. Once you get into college and start taking more advance science classes you might find them more interesting because they are for a higher level than general education. If you really want to be a doctor and you have the grades for it, I would say you should stick to your dream at least until you take some college level science classes.

As for the pressure from your family. If it's what you want to do, that's just fine. But you really have to realize it's your life and you're the one who has to live with your choices. If you choose a field just to make your family happy then you're going to wind up miserable.

Why don't you pursue a math degree, and meanwhile research medicine careers? You could take enough biology and chemistry to qualify for med school if that is still your choice.

Have you considered epidemiology? Math is essential in models which predict the spread of disease.

Also, you might consider taking some biology and anatomy classes to see if maybe you can find any of it interesting. If after taking these, you don't find you want to be a doctor, then be honest with your parents.

Some other careers in which math could help you and medicine are in the insurance industry, the Bureau of Statistics, and even areas of pure or applied mathematical research.

If you like music and acting, that might be a good stress reliever. Or who knows, you might be the next great actor. Just don't let yourself get stuck acting the same kind of roles over and over.

Ha! Imagine you acting on a show like ER or St Elsewhere! But if the money is good, and you don't let fame go to your head, well... who can argue with success?

you're in Highschool...relax!

after college is the real world, you don't want hypertension by 20.
Oh and in spite of what people may tell you, the college you go to doesn't really matter, and Highschool is actually bull-crap. Do well enough to leave your options open, but you don't have to seriously know what career you want until you're a sophomore in college and your major will change. Enjoy Highschool, take your required courses and other classes your parents want you to take. Then when you get to college you don't have report cards or ways for them to check up on you, if you end up not doing well in your major switch, you will find your path and they won't even know.

You know what, if moving to NYC and attempting to be an actor is a passion of yours then go for it. Just know that acting is a really tough business to break in to. I fall else fails you will have gen eds in college and you can take acting courses their while you are trying to sort through your options.

P.S, doctors don't make that much anymore, and the ones I know all wish they never became doctors. With the liability, and the amount of malpractice cases out there the only way to make lots of money as a doctor is to work in a very specialized field or as a very precise surgeon. Then your life won't be about helping people, it will be about money, medicine is for those who want to help. We don't need more mediocre doctors in this world, we have enough. Or you can become a vapid plastic surgeon (but it sounds like your not about physical precision) which might be the dream a family would want...not really though.

What you may find is that your fantasy of what an anesthesiologist does is not reality. If you aren't interested in science, you may not actually enjoy the job itself, let alone the training. Yes, you could probably overcome your distaste and become a doctor even though you dislike science, but you could end up miserable throughout life.

You can be a doctor even if you dislike medicine but it's going to be horrible to do something SO difficult for SO long when you don't like it. A great mathematician (Arnol'd) said "choosing the subject of study for a student is like choosing him a wife" so, the way I see it you'll end up marrying a girl chosen for you by your parents, sad but common. I wish I could talk some independence into you but I know too many people like you who'll end up doing things they don't want to and who are just looking for someone to tell them things that make them feel good about their situation.

your parents put to much pressure on you dude. Science and math go hand and hand, Try focusing more on the math part in sciences and maybe you'll gain abit more interest. For example chemistry, can be a huge math hassel
