All of these are symbols which can be typed on a normal computer keyboard to represent their untypable traditional representations of mathematical functions.

I learned them in programming classes and got so used to the computer programming representations that I now find traditional signs of mathematical equations to be quaint or even archaic.

It means "raised to the power of".

For example 2^2 would be 2 squared - or 2 times 2.

3^5 would be 3 raised to the power of 5.

x^2 is x squared - or x times x.

Because there is no easy way to write in the power as a superscript, we just write the karet - the ^ symbol that you see.

It just raises the number or variable to a power. When you have x^2, it means x squared. If you have x^3, it's x cubed. x^4 is x to the fourth power, and so on and so on.
