No, only 3 months/year. August is known to be the "rerun" month. People are on vacation as well as actors. Therefore, they skip August. No new shows start up in August - it's always September or even January.

No, it's not meant to be every three months. Sweeps months are based on the number of people who watch. So, August is actually a slow month: It is when kids are back at school and people are taking vacations. November is a sweeps month due to the fact that most shows are airing the last of their new episodes before they take a holiday break and air re-runs. February is a sweeps month because this is when shows return form winter hiatus. May is a sweeps month because this is when shows begin airing their season finales.

The TV seasons are like a school year for some - they typically last from September to May or June. September would make an excellent sweeps month, mainly because of all the season premieres for current shows, and serial premieres for whatever is new.

There are four "sweeps" periods in a given year: February, May, July, and November. During "sweeps," television ratings surveys of all local markets are simultaneously measured by a rating service.

Nielsen Media Research surveys all 210 local television markets in November, February, May and July (Honolulu, Fairbanks and Juneau are excluded in July). These months are known as sweep months, and the data are used by local stations and cable systems to set local ad rates and to make program decisions.

The term "sweep" dates back to the beginning of local television measurements in the 1950s and refers to how Nielsen Media Research mailed and processed diaries to sample households starting with the East Coast and sweeping across the nation.

Every 3 mos of the season, not the calendar year. Most programs in August, like the other 2 summer months, r on hiatus, & the new season begins the following month. I dunno if there's gonna b a sweeps month 4 the summer programs that r on, i.e. "America's Got Talent," "So You Think You Can Dance," "Big Brother." But still, viewership is usually down in the summer.

The major networks don't start their new seasons until mid to late September. Sweeps weeks are designed to get more people to watch and to generate more advertising revenue.
