If he feels unworthy of his peers or feels unattractive to women. That he happens to have no self-confidence within himself. Whenever he may see himself as below other men or even women. These R men with negative sex appeal for even other women and gay men happen to be cooler and tougher than the innocent nice guy everyone likes,but looks down upon.

Self deprivation is one thing where he puts himself down often, sometimes even telling people about what he thinks hes incapable of.

Also, body language speaks volumes - the way he carries himself, the way he talks and the way he talks. All can point to low or high confidence. I.e - Look at how Donald Trump acts.

If he's not asking you out, and you think it's because he has low self-esteem, it's actually because he doesn't want you enough to overcome his hesitation. You can help him by making it easier for him to talk to you, but that's about it. He has to do it on his own.
