There was a time when the U.S. was good friends with Fidel Castro. He was a mountain rebel, a romantic character, and we applauded his battles to gain control of the government in Cuba.
But, horrors! One of the first things he did was kick out the profitable U.S. business interests in Cuba....the sugar plantations, cigar factories, and primarily, Casinos, run by the American Mafia. These factories made big money, but that money came to the U.S. and did not benefit Cuba.
Then, Castro embraced the Russian Government, at a time when the Cold War was going full force. And he turned out to be a rigid, rather brutal dictator, tossing people into jail for their political beliefs.
So, the tide turned, and the sanctions were lowered, sanctions which probably hurt the Cuban people more than they hurt Castro.
Books have been written about the ridiculous attempts of the U.S. CIA to assassinate Castro, all of which failed. Lyndon Johnson is said to have been shocked by it all, stating, "we're running a Murder, Inc. here!"
For years, this Embargo has remained in place and it will never be removed as long as the strong Spanish voting bloc in our country continues to dislike Castro. In reality, there are many financial reasons to lift the Embargo and, let's admit it, many of the grudges happened years and years ago.
Perhaps when Castro dies, things will improve. His brother may be easier to deal with. However, politicians like votes and until those Spanish voters approve it, the Embargo will stay in place.

Oh brother! Have you studied any history at all? When castro took over Cuba as a communist dictator, we put the embargo on the goods...not black people....but on his communist agenda, and the killing he has done through his regeme. He took away the freedom of the Cuban people...why do you think as many as could fled here? It had nothing to do with race. And we have always wanted to free the Cuban people, which Castro does not want to happen.
China is a whole different country....and they are hoping the trade will open up China...but it isn't happening...instead we are getting hurt by their goods flooding our country....full of lead, poison, etc....

Castro came to power in 1959. His own men did not know he was a communist until it was too late. Castro's enemies were given show trials and lined up and shot. The expression used was "to the wall" He confiscated all private property much of it owned by Americans. He tried to export a communist revolution to latin America. One of his minnions, Che Guevara is a folk hero among the left. He let the soviets point nuclear tipped missles at the U.S. We should have left China in the dark ages. I knew when Nixon opened relations that China would be a great power. They are communists in name only now. China is an open market dictatorship that appears destined to rule the world.
