All we can offer them is the opportunity for self determination. These people have no experience with liberty and will take time to come up to speed. I am sure pretty most everyone who has actually experienced freedom will want to keep it. The militant extremists know this, too. That is why they won't give the civilians a chance to see what freedom is like. They keep bombing, kidnapping, and killing them.

If the Iraqi people could just live in relative peace for a few months the seeds of liberty will take root. The terrorists are desperate to prevent that from happening.

But hey, you have to start the process sometime.

It's hardly worried you in the past. You have either sent in a bunch of marines or contributed to the removal of the leader you don't like. Perhaps Vietnam and Iraq will finally convince you that your time would be better spent in getting your own house in order and not interfering in the affairs of other nations. It certainly hasn't brought you anything to be thrilled about except maybe the increased profits of your armaments manufacturers. I wonder how many young Americans have sacrificed their lives and health and for what.

We have to accept it as part of a new democracy "growing pains." Freedom means having the right to make bad decisions. When you give people freedom to vote, and they've never had freedom in their lives, they're going to make bad choices. Imagine the bad choices that each generation of Americans have made but the next generation corrects those mistakes
Like it or not, people who have never tasted freedom will tend to elect things that we, as Americans, will never understand. Remember, we've had 200 years of practice in democracy and they're just in their infancy. With any luck, they will have unselfish leaders who put the interest of the nation ahead of their own interests.

Sometimes we get so busy pushing our way of life on people that we forget this. You have asked a great question here, I think we may have to just accept it. Our way of life here in America is great for us, but maybe, just maybe others don't agree with it...
