Force yourself to practice public speaking, perhaps by joining classes with people who have a similar problem. This will probably help you to get over your fear, because you realize more often (as you said) that your accent is not bad and that people will be able to understand you fine if you don't get nervous.

there's nothing unusual about that, the nervousness or worry can make it worse, listen if it makes u feel better there are speaking, voice lessons and they'll even teach u how 2 loose an accent but it's really all practise and i don't suggest it. Although ppl joke a lot, many of us like accents. I believe it's part of who and what u are, it comes with personality, ancestry, etc.. to loose it comes natural with time, but take it away and u'll loose part of urself. Don't sweat it, consider urself one of millions. There are those of us who have or had, to varying degrees, the terror of speaking in front of 2 or 3 ppl, without an accent or speech impediment. When i was 5, my mother started saying, "u sound like an idiot every time u open ur mouth". I lived in holy terror of not just speaking around most ppl. but of ppl finding out how terribly stupid i was. I wasted many many years hiding and building walls. I was labled stuck up, conceited, others alway said i though i was " 2 good for everyone else", and even that was better than letting them know what i thought was the trueth. so i'd forget what others "think".

Smile. You worry too much about other people and their opinions. Why should they matter to you? Why give them power to hurt you? If you have an accent, you must be fluent in more than one language. That makes you smarter than most of them anyway. Believe in yourself. As you start speaking in public, keep concentrating on the information you are sharing with people. That will keep your mind occupied. They will listen to you, because your accent makes you sound unique. That is a great thing. Celebrate your identity: you are special. Remember that.

I dont know how old you are, but if you are still in high school or college taking a speech class may help. As a freshman I took a speech and debate class and quickly got over my fear because I had to speak every class in front on an audience (usually the class) and after a while it became so normal that I no longer had troubles speaking in front of other audiences. The more you do it the more comfortable you will become with yourself. If you continue to volenteer your idea's over and over in differnet settings it will become less and less painful each time.
Public speaking is one of the biggest fears in our country!
Good luck!

Hey, this is a crazy idea, but why don't you take up group singing lessons. Like a choir. You'll improve your vocalization skills, and since your in a group, you have to sing in front of other people and it would be fun and you'd meet new people!
And then maybe you can get over that obstacle and be comfortable with yourself!

i bet the only reason ur get so nervous is because ur aware of ur accent...if its not noticable then it shouldn't matter...and if u want to get rid of ur accent then only speaking more will help with that...but other than that u shouldn't be embaressed cuz its really just all in your head...good luck

i had this same problem
i still get nervous but not so badly as before
what i did was practice, practice, practice
each time i did it, it got easier.. not that it was ever easy but still better
you will find out if you tell people that you are a little nervous they will be rooting for you and actually helping you out
and i took a speech class that also helped me out
hope this helped you
good luck

find any place possible to do more of it...pactice makes you great at it.....laugh at yourself ..your human just like the rest of them out there.....don't judge them and they won't judge you.....freedom in america is being aloud to make a statement or a speech before a group or before the public.....even here that forum can be hard to find.....you can also make statements on behalf of others if expained before you procede.....start with local politics and a cause you believe in ....this creates the passions to do more good also......carry on later bye.....
