Ego represents a fixation on one's own self and projects a negative image to others. It presents a person as egocentric and makes them look like they think they are better than everybody else.

Ego is just the separation of self from world. Normally we don't even notice ego; it's just the point of view -- when we do notice it, it's usually because it's out of hand. In the absence of reflective intelligence, moral sophistication, psychological security, and/or socialization, the ego function can dominate and becomes consuming. Ego's desire for self-gratification is unfulfillable, as desire and the pursuit of it is the ego's whole function and being, and when desire itself is prioritized, enjoyment of life is degraded. Then we say that ego is making us unhappy. Also the ego's self-absorption allows other people to be treated as mere mirrors of the self and tools for self-gratification, and that's when we usually complain about someone with a "big" ego.

Ego means (usually) pride-but it also means identity- so long we think that we are this body then we have false ego- true ego is the soul-
anyway false ego is bad because it is illusion
pride is bad because it is far from love

For me its not that the ego is bad,
it is more that it is a limitation.
Ego is about competition, identification and differentiation and it holds one to being concerned about what others think.
The ego will not allow the being to be free to soar high in aspiration, it will come up with why not, why you shouldn't.
To be empowered within yourself, so that decisions are not relative to what has gone before, expectations, shoulds, etc, this to me is what I aspire to.
The ego will try to keep one tied to doubt, sorrow, fear, anger, guilt disappointment, while the spirit within wants to aspire and soar with no limitation.
This is my small rendition of "ego" and is by no means all there is.
I trust you have been able to follow what I have been trying to say.
Bless you for the question.
