Sky is not blue but it appears to be blue. When the sun's white light comes into the atmosphere, it is dispersed into 7 different colours because of the density of the atmosphere. Violet light is one of them and it scatters the most therefore we see the scattered violet light which appears blue. If there would have been no atmosphere on earth then the sky would have appeared dark.

The sky is blue because sunlight is made up of all colours of the rainbow, but the gases in our atmosphere are just the right molecular size to "scatter" the blue light in sunlight.
That scattered light sort of "paints" the sky blue.
The rest of the sunlight (which still has some blue that wasn't scattered) is what we see as sunlight.
Our sky is not a celestial object - celestial means "of the heavens" or "of the cosmos" and our sky is part of the Earth system.

Light coming from the sun is what's called "white light" White light contains all the colors of the rainbow. When it enters Earth's atmosphere this light is separated into its individual colors by chemical elements in the atmosphere and scattered across the sky. Nitrogen is the most abundant element in our atmosphere, and that element scatters the color blue across our sky more than the other colors. In space, there is no atmosphere to separate colors from the white light and space looks black.

I read once that the sky is blue because it's a reflection from the oceans. Not that I believe that or not. I was at Cape Canaveral one time and asked our tour guide when do the astronauts reach blackness in space. The tour guide got mad at me and said I had to ask an astronaut. He asked us if we had any questions. I thot that was a logical question.
