A bit of both....the beat makes the music in some cases. But the message is what really carries it for me.

I tend to listen to the lyrics first and then when I listen to a song again, I'll listen to the beat. One song that I can take or leave the lyrics but LOVE the guitar in....is Still of the Night by Whitesnake.....the part I like starts at 3:19 into the song.......AWESOME!

What grabs me is usually the beats, but the lyrics have to be good to make the song great. Sometimes hearing the lyrics make a song that wasn't so great before amazing too.
