What do u think?

CyberYukon, I dont believe people make up their own rules, they just dont follow the rules, period. It's as simple as that. A simple law like not exceeding the speed limit should never be taken advantage of if youre late for work. So youre late, I dont give a ****, neither do the people u run into when u speed. There is nothing abstract about rules and laws

Doctor J, making rules aint evolutionary, its the fact that humans became so smart to be able to build societies, make rules for them but dont even follow the rules.

It's not that humans don't follow their rules...but rather that they think up other rules to follow instead, and those rules conflict with the first set of rules. The rule "obey the speed limit" might be compromised if you're late for an important job interview and you're following your rule of "being late for job interviews results in a poor evaluation"

Also, rules are a complex, higher-order abstract process. Sometimes more basic or primative needs may get in the way. The need for oxygen might override society's rule that we should be polite. See Abe Maslow for more details on
that.

There would be no evolutionary benefit to making rules if no one followed the rules.

Most people follow most rules most of the time. Otherwise, for example, you would not be able to drive your car down the road.
