why are the black boxes the only thing to remain in tact after a crash. what does it contain

They are not BLACK. They are BRIGHT ORANGE or RED, and sometimes they have bright yellow stripes on them. The boxes don't make it through the crash unscathed. Sometimes they're banged up, but it keeps the recorder inside from getting damaged. Some boxes have digital records, some have magnetic wire records, some record all kinds of flight information, some include voice recordings from the pilots' headsets.

No, they are usually orange or red or some other bright colour and Never black. They are bright colors to make it easier to find in a crash. Yes, they are metal boxes. To try keep the information safe, but they don't necessarily always survive.

They record as much data of the flight as possible so investigators can piece together what happened and try prevent the same thing happening again.

yes they r, and their purpose it to record the data, they record up to some time and then keep repeating...like a security camera, after a crash, u can see the plane's condition and what caused it because the box is made of strong material so it is sort of indestructible.
