Most utilities fall under a monopoly structure. Though other forms of competition do prevent these from being complete monopolies. For instance, you could switch you home to propane vice using natural gas, or put in solar panels instead of buying electricity. Finally there is cable TV, though you also have the option for direct TV or Dish Network. Usually true monopolies need some sort of public support to exist. The is also cost prohibiters preventing other companies from entering into competion.
