How far would I have to go before having to synchronize? I plan on removing the carbs so I can get at the float bowls. Take them off and spray carb cleaner up into the carbs.

If you remove the carbs, or remove the throttle cables from them, they should really be re-synchronised.

But on most bikes you can leave the carbs on the bike and the cables attached to them when removing the float bowls.

Always give year, make, engine size and model # when asking questions. We need all of that Info to give an informed answer.
The short answer - yes.
Just removing carbs from your bike and cleaning them, won't have any affect on the synchronization.
If you make any adjustments like re-install the mixture screws to a different setting, or change the float height, then the carbs should be synchronized.
You should be able to tell if the bike is idling rougher than normal after you re-install them - which would be cause to sync the carbs.

Just leave the sync adjustments alone and it will be no worse than before. Why do you need to pull the bowls off? If you just want to clean them out use someTechron(sp?) in the gas tank to get the gum out. It's the same chemical composition as Yamaha fuel system cleaner and a lot cheaper. If you are having flooding issues or idle circuit issues you will need to clean the carbs thoroughly.

actually anytime the carbs are removed from the bike they should be synched when reinstalled on the bike. If you want confirmation read your shop manual.
