When we protect one species & are indifferent about the suffering of another species, this seems to be more about what humans want than about fairness & comfort toward all beings.
Many people who are quite concerned about dogs & other companion animals, endangered species & whichever species they might consider "cute" don't want to acknowledge how "food" or "research" animals are treated.
It is unlikely that the majority of Americans will embrace vegatarianism any time soon, but there certanly could & should be better laws to give "food" animals a much better quality of life. Thanks to PeTA & other groups, things are a bit better for some food animals but most cows, pigs & chickens don't have it any better than Vick's dogs although their suffering is more from indifference & "practicality" than outright brutality. Same motive though: human convenience & profit.
If word gets out that laboratory tests are being conducted on dogs or cats, there is usually a public outcry and/or a boycott but few people care if rodents are the victims. In fact, earlier this year I wrote a letter of protest to Pom Wonderful, politely saying that there is no reason to conduct animal tests to back up their product's health claims & my family would no longer drink it while this was going on. Months later, they responded that they didn't use dogs, cats or primates for their tests, as if that made everything ok.

Most animal abuse agencies care about all animals, farm and pets. Vick is getting so much attention because he's a celebrity. Watch Animal Planet, like Animal Precinct, or Animal Houston/Miami, etc. and you will see them responding to help all kinds of animals not just dogs and cats.

Being the two a dogs-lover and a hunter, i think i will thoroughly answer this question. dogs-struggling with is the sport of pitting 2 or extra canines to combat one yet another until eventually the demise (or close). frequently having a wager on the end result's in touch. this is a sluggish, painful demise for the canines in touch. Hunters attempt to dispatch their prey as promptly as attainable (i.e. one-shot, one-kill). this is finished to chop back the animals soreness, save the beef from tasting gamey, and to maintain the animal from working away and not being stumbled on. ethical hunters do no longer intentionally injure or maim an animal, as is the objective of dogs-struggling with.

Peta is working hard to develop more human laws for
"livestock." Support Peta if you want farm animals to be to treated with more respect.
In Ohio, it's illegal to pick up a wild bird feather that has fallen in your backyard. That's way too rigid of a law.

Our laws only seem to vilify abusing and killing animals that we have grown to rely on for companionship. Dogs and cats are popular pets, so we protect them and severly punish anyone who harms them. Roaches and rats are considered vermin, so there are people who can make a career out of killing them. As for deer and fish and other popular animals to hunt, I guess they are somewhere in the middle, so we make you have a license to legally kill them and protect their ecosystems to keep them alive.

I like cat fighting. You know - when two women go at it. Much more fun to watch and no animals are harmed.
