Remember when you realized it was different to you than to most people? Or did someone tell you? How did you know?

I've loved astronomy so long that I actually DON'T remember that first time. For literally as long as I can remember, it was the most wondrous thing. I was probably 10 or so before I started realizing that not everybody in the world felt that same fascination. (Actually, that STILL seems a little weird to me. :-)

Heck yeah I remember. It was around 5 or 6 when I first realized how amazing and mysterious the stars were and when I was 6 I recieved my first telescope for X-Mas, as 60 mm refracting telescope. I just knew that discovering more about these cosmic beings was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life so I made it my life's dream to study Astronomy and someday maybe even look down on the Earth as astronauts do. Now I'm a freshman in college studying those very same stars I looked up at over 12 years ago.

I don't know if I could put my finger on any one moment where I decided that I truly loved astronomy. I do know that one of my earliest memories is that one Christmas when I was fairly young (five-ish?) I had gotten a little book of constellations, where the constellations glowed in the dark. So I was probably reading that all day, and then in the evening I went outside, and up in the sky above me was the constellation Orion, crystal clear. Certainly over the years that image has remained with me and has helped to inspire me towards studying astronomy and astrophysics.

Other things that have also had an influence are Carl Sagan's series Cosmos and a few teachers and professors I've had.

ive loved stars and the night sky for as long as i can remember. but a few years ago i went outside and by chance i caught a glimpse of a faint green aurora overhead. i watched it until it faded back into the night. after that i dove right in, got a 130mm reflector, started learning all that i could about astronomy, and havent looked back since. now theres not much i like more that going outside on a clear night and relaxing.

I don't remember exactly. I just always knew. The telescope I got for my 5th birthday didn't hurt any, but I recall being interested in space flight before that. I really got interested in astronomy in high school when I found Sky and Telescope magazine and a number of telescope making books in the school library.

Great question! I was probably 5 years old and asked my parents how far away the stars were.I remember there was a star right next to the moon and I thought they would collide!

I was five years old, and I saw a bright reddish star in the sky. I asked my mom what it was - she didn't know, so she took me to the planetarium the next day and we talked to an astronomer there. He told me it was the planet Mars. From that moment I was hooked.

I was a kid. I just knew I wanted to go out there and be an astronaut. Back then, it was a patriotic thing to do. Be a modern day explorer. I am an adult and i still want to go exploring the stars!
