Qustion about Groundhog day.?

Question

I kinda grasp the idea of ground hog day, about the ground hog seeing it's shadow and all, but like what are these people doing with this ground hog ? http://www.groundhog.org/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Groundhogday2005.jpg

why are they holding it ? and do they do this every year, with the same ground hog ? im confused :/ is ita pet or what ?

It's a sort of a mascot. It's just for fun and tradition. The story goes that if the groundhog sees his shadow when he comes out - he gets scared ad there will be six more weeks of winter

Whether or not the groundhog sees his shadow does not really predict whether or not there will be more weeks of winter. It's just an old story.

I love Groundhog Day. Putting up the Groundhog Tree, Hanging groundhog fur-cover socking above the fireplace, sending out groundhog cards to friends and loved ones . . . yeah, Groundhog Day is great.
