If you have a holiday where you eat a lot of candy, then you have to go to the dentist. There is a connection here, I just know it!

Yes. Yes they were.

Just like high cholesterol holidays were invented by doctors; high patriotic holidays were invented by flag makers; and high travel holidays were invented by fuel producers.

And fake holidays (Groundhog Day, Earth Day, etc.) were invented by some one with a burr up their **** for one thing or another.

There is a connection between candy holidays, but it isn't dentists. The holidays of Easter, Halloween, and Christmas all have their secular origins in pagan traditions where feasting and offerings of the harvest were made to ensure future prosperity.

Easter was a springtime celebration honoring fertility, hence rabbits and eggs. Christmas was the solstice, and the offerings of sweets and fruits were intended to entice the sun to return and give longer days and better growing conditions.

Halloween was a little different from the Roman pagan traditions of Easter and Christmas. Many of the Halloween traditions come from the Celts. At the close of the Autumn harvest there was a perceived date where the separation between living and the dead was lessened. In an effort to appease their dead ancestors, bribes were given, ultimately taking the form of sweets.
