Here's what happens in Kenya when men aren't around:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/6959209.stm
Mr Muite caused laughter when he told parliament that the monkeys had taken to harassing and mocking women in a village.
because women are primarily responsible for the farms, they have borne the brunt of the problem, as they try to guard their crops.
They say the monkeys are more afraid of young men than women and children, and the bolder ones throw stones and chase the women from their farms.
"When we come to chase the monkeys away, we are dressed in trousers and hats, so that we look like men," resident Lucy Njeri told the BBC News website
"But the monkeys can tell the difference and they don't run away from us and point at our breasts. They just ignore us and continue to steal the crops."
When the men aren't there, the monkeys basically dominate the women.
Why do feminists say women don't need men and are independent when this is what happens when men aren't there?

Hey it doesn't have to be primates, it could be bears, mountain lions, wild dogs etc.

Simone - "Many women" do look up to men... please don't use "many .. ", it's a use of weasel words. We're not talking about the "however many is many (obviously not 50% or you should have said most) women you are trying to use to deflect any criticism, we're talking about feminists who have stated they don't need men and frequently state things like they would have it better if men weren't around. You have for some reason got this idea that just because a minority of women may not think in a certain way it precludes criticism of the one that do, even if they are a majority, especially in the context of this place. Do you get what I'm saying here?

So what's the point of all of this HB?
You're trying to prove that women need men, when you don't want women anyway?
Many women do look up to men and do all they can as far as it goes with respecting and appreciating them.
But why isn't it good enough?
Yes I do understand now HB, of course women need men. Alot of women may say they don't but as you have posted about a woman who was around 50 years of age & was desperately trying to find a man(but was way too picky), shows that women such as these fighting against nature only lose out in the end.
Yes, women do want and need men, but I hope that you and other men can understand that women don't want to be taken advantage of for that fact. Women don't want to be seen as being needy incase of repercussions.

That's seriously some funny stuff.....lol! O.k. I'm going to venture a few guesses here as to what may be the causes...
The article said that women run the farms, so, if monkeys were going to raid crops then of course it's women they're going to run into/and up against. (Not men.) The women have not found ways to effectively get rid of the monkeys or scare them off...the monkeys know this...so they keep coming back. The monkeys seem to be more afraid of men: probably because they are unaccustomed to men, since women run the farms. The monkeys fear what is unknown to them. (Or, it could be that the monkeys equate men with guns, which, of course, are lethal to them). The article states that when the women dress up as men, the monkeys know the difference and aren't afraid...well of course. Monkeys have senses other than just visual senses. How do animals recognize other animals? They use ALL of their senses. Many animals have a heightened sense of smell, for instance.
The part of the article where a woman states that monkeys are "pointing at women's breasts" and sexually harrassing them (this is the part that cracks me up- and yet if it is really how the women perceive it, then it is actually kind of sad) it is likely a product of the women's unfortunate life- experiences: they probably live in an extremely sexist society and so it comes naturally to them to define the monkey's behavior (comparing it to men's ...lol!) in this way. Or, it could be (and this is more likely, acutally): the "sexism" of the monkeys exists only in the mind of the particular woman reporting it. What the article fails to mention is this- are the monkeys (the ones who are pointing and such) are they all male monkeys? Are there female monkeys doing this, too? I wonder. I have no doubt the monkeys are mocking these women. They are smart enough to know they are getting away with something. I seriously doubt, however, that the monkeys are being "sexist"....lol!
My thinking is this: if the women were allowed to defend their crops with whatever force is deemed necessary, eventually the monkeys would get the picture and leave the crops alone.

Most likely animals would take over except for the domesticated animals, such as cattle, sheep and pets. The majority of these would not be able to adapt to living without their caretaker human counterparts before being eaten by a predator.
To answer the feminist question, the majority of the worlds' women do not live in such close proximity to our primate brethren.
In more developed areas of the world, it is true that women do not need men in the traditional sense of a provider and protector. Women are able to provide basic necessities and beyond themselves. Single women are also happier. This would not necessarily be true in a less developed area such as the example in the article shows.
You have to take into account that it is only recently that men and women married for love. Prior to that is was for survival. Now, with a few exceptions of course, men and women marry out of choice.
So, it really is true that love changes everything.

At least in Kenya the village will help to raise these children so often abandoned by their fathers for various reasons. Some are orphaned because of HIV and other fatal diseases. Over forty percent of Kenyan mothers are single. They usually do not get alimony or child support. There is no real social welfare system or economic opportunity in a country like Kenya. Many of these women have four or more children and work thirteen hours a day in addition to various chores such as getting water and preparing meals. So this is the result of not having men around in Kenya.

Sounds like environmentalist wacko crap. Monkeys are a growing danger to women, children and babies, but you can't do anyhting to the little vermin, or you'll go to jail. If the women were allowed to fight back the little bastards would clear out in a hurry. They eat all the food and ruin crops, but God forbid people are allowed to do anything about it. In the mean time they are told to leave the monkeys alone and are thrown some government rations. What in the hell is this world coming to when vermin are given more government protection than human babies??

I do not think we will have too much of a vervet monkey problem in the USA. ( do not know about bull snakes ) In a recent study vervet monkeys showed variance in toy preference at play when presented with trucks, dolls and neutral toys, such as coloring books. This study and many others like it did much damage to the gender and difference feminist position of " socially constructed " gender.
So, I guess you do have a small point; a very small point.

What you don't seem to understand is that men are never there. Women do the farming and watch the fields. They are the only ones the monkeys ever run into.

Some think men and women need each other. Some of them even like each other. There are some that love each other, but they are extremists! I think we should call them "peopleists" (humanist was already taken). They sure are weird!

Although males and females have a hard time understanding each other and getting along sometimes, the fact is that they really need each other. What one gender lacks the other makes up for.
