I always tip, and usually tip 20% or so, sometimes more. Only for very bad service do I go below 15%. But if you acted like a total jerk and were rude, your tip would be about 5%, or maybe even less. For terrible service, rudeness, and no redeeming features, I might leave you a quarter, just to let you know I hadn't just forgotten to tip. I'd also talk to the manager on my way out.
If it's just a matter that you are obviously new and inexperienced but are obviously trying, you'd still get around 20% - everybody is new sometime.

I too am a server (20 yrs) and if you are giving bad service and giving an attitude to people, you aren't getting a tip. I have bad days too and I hate some of the tight wads that I serve but, I don't give bad service.(unless they are repeat bad tippers) Like in any job you need to go to work and leave all personal problems at home. As for your comment about not knowing what you have been through that day. People don't care. They are there because they want to eat out. If the people are getting to you then take a break and go outside and have a smoke. I feel for you and know how it is.

I've never stiffed anyone on purpose (I will admit a couple times at places where you pay up front I didn't have any small bills for a tip and then forgot to go back and leave a tip). If the servers is truly bad I'll leave a penny I want them to know I meant not to leave a tip and just didn't forget.
I worked as a cook for years. I know what servers go threw to get their tips. I also know when I'm getting real bad service. I'm not talking about someone who doesn't refile my drinks every time they are empty or messes something up with my order. I'll tip less for something like that. I only tip the penny when i have truly bad service. I'll give a couple of examples.
One day I got out of work and didn't want anything I had been cooking all day so went to the restaurant next door. it was about two in the after noon and there was one other table in the place. I was sat in the smoking section (this should tell you how long ago this was). I sat and waited for 10 minutes before my server showed up. when she showed up I order a beer and my food and asked if I could get and ash tray. She brought out my beer and no ash tray so I ended up grabbing a dirty one from a couple tables away. By the time I got my food my there I had finish my beer and order another which I never got. The next time she showed up at the table was to bring me my check which she stood there and waited till I paid it. Then she came back with my change. The thing that really got me was the whole time I was sitting there I could see her sitting in the back of the restaurant talking with someone.
Another time I went out with my girlfriend on a date. we went to a place we had heard good thing about when the server came out to the table she let out this bis sigh then asked us what we wanted. we ordered and didn't get our drink until our food. when she severed us out food she piratically threw it on the table in fount of us (the plates landed with a thunk). The food was cold and our drinks were warm (you could see they had ice in them at one time but it had melted). We didn't see her again until she brought us the bill. Then we had to flag down another server to pay it.
I under stand servers make there money off tips but I'm not tipping anyone if they do a crappy job of serving me. I figure it this way if they don't make any money maybe they'll find a job they can do.

You don't live in the real world. If I get bad service I never leave a tip nor will I ever leave a tip for bad service. In case you don't realize it we all work hard for our money and getting piss poor service when we are paying for good service is not acceptable. If you give stellar service and don't get good tips I would have sympathy for you. You admit that you are not a good waiter and it was a bad day. Either find a new job that you can do or improve your attitude TIPS stands for too insure good service

dude, you just revealed the reason why people don't leave you good tips. You delivered crappy service...you were 'in a pissy mood'. Believe it or not, those people DID NOT come to the restaurant to hear your sob story about how tired you are or how your dog died...they want you to bring them their food, correctly, with a smile, fill their drinks and get them whatever else they may need. If you are accommodating...they should leave you a tip...a good one too. But if you give shitty service....by no means should they feel obligated to pay you for doing a crappy job. Don't be mad at me for saying this...I wait tables to pay my rent also. But, I take pride in my work, go above and beyond to make people happy, and I know that my degree of excellence should reflect in the money I take home. Does that always happen? No....some people are assholes and are going to leave you $2 on a $60 bill no matter how wonderful you are....that is what I have problem with. People, if you get awesome service, that makes you want to come back, they make you feel welcome, and take care of you....you better damn well tip and tip well. I am INSULTED if I give you service above and beyond normal and you stiff me or leave me 5%...especially if you sit at my table for hours. But, as a customer......I too will leave a tip that reflects my displeasure with my service, and maybe that will inspire this sub-par server to step up their game...or continue to get crappy tips. It's hard to pay rent if you are a crappy server. Bottom line....if you choose to become a server...you better damn well do your best, then and THEN only do you have a right to complain about a dissappointing tip.
Great Service....TIP PEOPLE..and Tip WELL!!!
Poor Service....show your displeasure.

I'm a waitress of 5 years and a manager. I understand what you are saying but the words you chose are confusing people. If you gave bad service, of course you are going to get a bad tip.....thats the point. Maybe you should see if you can work in the kitchen for a while to get a break from crappy customers.

You need to earn the gratuity. If you are having a bad day and you give bad service, you do not deserve a tip. If you give me good service, I do not have a problem leaving 20%.

Waiters and waitresses get carry of much less pay because of the fact area of their pay relies upon on your assistance. How plenty they make is at once on the subject of the form of provider they supply. in case you consume out, you're estimated to tip and in case you may now not arise with the money for to tip then you certainly would desire to consume in yet another form of eating place the place it quite is now not estimated. it quite is now not honest of you to take of their time whilst they'd nicely be waiting on somebody else which will tip. a tremendous shopper is tremendous regardless of if it would not pay the hire. in case you continuously merely take in area and value the waiters $, why do you think of they could choose to attend on you. you're considered a stiff. think of in phrases that the top is an area of the fee of the meal. attempt buffets. . .you many times do now not would desire to tip. Or rapid nutrients varieties of places. . .regardless of if if I owned the eating place and a waiter or waitress became into decrease than professional (that would not propose tremendous) to any shopper. . .they could be finding for a job. merely attempt to keep in mind. . .those anybody is attempting to make money. . .if that's merely too materialistic. . .then consume someplace else. Oh and it quite is the prepare dinner that places the parts on your plate, now not the waiter.

I do leave tips! I used to not leave tips on the basis of the opening speech of Mr. Pink in Resevoir Dogs! I told this to my friends, and they were utterly shocked. Since then on, I've tipped.

I always tip-I'm not a big tipper but I leave a reanonable tip-if I'm just having coffee & doing my art & a woman is waiting on me-I'll ask her if she likes roses & I'll draw one up on a "notepad" paper & make it with heavy detail-(on the back I'll put "this is just a 'tip' -thank you" so I don't cause any trouble with her lover/hubby/bf/etc. (I've left several rose drawings along with others as tips in the past 10+ yrs.)
