The Code of Hammurabi is one of the earliest sets of codified laws. Dates back to about 1750 BC in Mesopotamia.

Listed crimes and punishments. Set guidelines for resolving minor disputes between citizens and for how citizens should conduct themselves.

An important feature of the Code of Hammurabi is that it didn't allow for explanations or excuses.

Major significance: Represented one of the first real attempts to put the law in writing so that everyone could understand it. Made consistency a key legal component. Law was not just the whim of the ruler.

Also shows how our legal culture has evolved based on the importance we place on individual rights. In our system of law, defendants have numerous rights and the ability to assert their defenses before a jury of peers. (As opposed to the "no excuses" policy of 4000 years ago.

This is an assignment, so I won't give you my opinion. However, I will give you some questions you should ask yourself in order to help you get your answers:
1. Does there appear to be any bias toward a particular type of person? (non-citizens, women, other races, slaves, etc.)
2. Are the laws in the code "morally" motivated, or "religiously" motivated?
3. Is there any mention of a religious deity?
4. Is there any mention of who will administer justice?
5. Can you figure out the economic theories and policies behind the code?

I think it's significant because Hammurabi legislated the world's first building codes:

229: If a builder build a house for some one, and does not construct it properly, and the house which he built fall in and kill its owner, then that builder shall be put to death.

230: If it kill the son of the owner, the son of that builder shall be put to death.

Hammurabi sure didn't kid around.
