It depends on where you are ordering take out from. If it is from a "take out" restaurant than the employees are most likely getting paid min wage, at least. Although, I'm sure they have a tip jar out and it is always a nice gesture but not expected or required. However, if you are ordering take out from a restarant that is more of a sit down type of place than a tip is a bit more expected. The people serving you there are most likely making server wage which is around $3.00/hour. In this case a 5% tip is fine. Keep in mind that the preparation for a to go order can be time consuming and they are doing you a service....if they do it well, why not show your appreciation with a tip or at least a kind thank you would do!

I don't feel that a tip is necessary for carry out, you aren't getting the "extra services" that you get when you eat in. However if it is a place where you get "carry-out" often, I would tip a buck or so ..... you may find that you will get some extras. I work close to a small bar and get carry out there often to take to work. After I started tipping, when I asked for extra sauces or condiments, I usually would get plenty of them at no charge. So, my thought is ..... if it's somewhere you will go often, a tip would be nice, otherwise not necessary.

No, not unless you want to. The reason for PICK UP is so you don't have to tip. Just because your credit card receipt has a tip line doesn't mean you have to. You are doing yourself the service by driving, walking, riding or however you are getting there to take the food. Nobody gave you water and bread and asked how you are this evening. You are going to pour your own wine at your house and act as the server. Think of it as a glorified grocery store.

I tip $2. After all, someone had to box it up, check it, sack it up, possibly come out in inclement weather, they might have other tables waiting, and meanwhile I sit on my butt in my car because I'm too lazy to go in and pick it up. I think that deserves a couple bucks at least, more if the weather's bad.

TIP! just a buck or two! i know if i see that someone tipped me at my job i give them extra stuff..and really take care of them. Its a slap in the face when you have a huge check and no tip. Also most restaurant workers make under minimum wage and they rely on your generosity!

i suggest that if you dont tip, then you dont order pickup from the restaurant too often, or they will give you a little extra after they realize you dont tip

and to the person who says you dont need to tip them for doing their job, these people make 2.13 an hour, they make their living off of tips you moron

I agree with Chefgrille, the waitresses usually run around and pack it up between waiting on tables. I always give $1-2.

No tip is not necessary, why tip an employee that is simply doing what they are being paid to do..
