I'm 22 and I've lived in Paterson my whole. I do not have a drivers lisence, so much of the time I am forced to work out of the home since I'm horrified of walking around here at night, or using the public transportation here. I've gotten threats before just for being white, which is rather hurtful I must say.

That being said, my family doesn't think they could afford the taxes in any other nicer areas in NJ. Is this true? As it is we already pay near 10k a year...

I am originally from Newark. 20+ years ago I landed in Middlesex county. I am glad for my children and my wife that I did but man do I miss the city.

That being said, it is CRAZY to think you can't get out. You are paying close to 10K a year in taxes and you don't think you can afford anywhere else? I don't know your financial situation but if you are paying that kind of tax nut I think you can afford a move. Granted I don't think Alpine or Saddle River is within reach, but I'll let you in on a little secret.

New Jersey Industrial Taxes are over the top! What does that mean to you? Well let's put it like this. Find a town that has an established industrial area and you will find property taxes are 1/3 to 1/2 of what they are in similar towns. Worried about poloution? Then you probably shouldn't be in NJ in the first place.

Another secret; My property taxes are $2,900 a year! Sounds good I know but be careful. Once you cross that bridge the bread really sucks! You may not be aware of this little know fact but the Raritan River Crossing is the Real Mason-Dixon Line. It's a bit different down here ya'll.

Good Luck!

At last count, there were 49 other states. Given that you're starting from N.J., at least one is in walking distance.

There are some pretty nice areas of the U.S. where the annual property taxes on a 3 bed/2 bath home with 2 car garage are under $1500 per year.

Back to your original question, can you afford to move...

You're in Paterson. You can't afford NOT to.

I agree with everything loancareer says - having been from Hudson County - what a dive and look at the home prices. Anyway back to your question - yes you need to get out - but first - you didn't mention what your career path is - are you still in school? dependent on your family? if so - then finish that first and then consider leaving!

I didn't get a chance to thrive until I moved away. See where the jobs are vs cost of living and what you like (eg, beach, desert, cold, hot, etc.) and branch out -

if you want to stay in NJ - well then move further west or north or south - away from the metro area to find something decent...it's way too congested - too much competition for a young person starting out where you are.

Good luck.
