What does it mean when a coin for sale has a letter and a number such as KM 867 ?

KM# stands for Krause/Mishler. They make standard Catalogs of world coins from 1601-2007 in 5 volumes. The KM# by itself is no help unless you know the country. If you actually have a coin KM# 867 go to the country that made it, look up that number and it should be the coin you have. The books do a good job in helping identify world coins in general. There are books that do specialize in one country or time period of one area, that have more info. I have a set of the KM books and do use them a lot. The whole set is not cheap though and new editions come out to update them. Not everyone buys a new one each time, but may wait till another one comes out.
